"Mission Eyes" outreach at Zimba Eye Clinic in Zambia

Zambia 2009

Dr. P. Jeffrey Colquhoun, Dr. William F. Waterbury and others from Battle Creek will be traveling to Zambia in August 2010 to bridge the gap between the staggering need for eye care in Africa by providing their surgical and eye care skills to remedy completely treatable conditions and restore sight to many. Please take a moment to view the video of last year's mission trip. See bottom of page for full length version.

You can bring help and hope for a lifetime of vision to many through the Mission Eyes Foundation at BCCF.  Your donation can assist residents of Battle Creek in need of sight restoring surgery as well as support mission work from Battle Creek churches traveling to Zambia.

Your donation will provide for:

  • Vision screenings for children to prevent loss of sight from common eye problems like strabismus and amblyopia.
  • Adult vision screenings to help prevent and diagnose vision loss from devastating eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration in the Battle Creek area.
  • Medical supplies for church mission trips, such as to Zimba, Zambia

International Missions

P. Jeffrey Colquhoun MD has been part of mission trips to the Caribbean, Central America, the Middle East (with Jordan/Pakistan refugees) and Africa.  Introduced to Zambia in 2004 by non-profit organization “FOZ”, Dr. Colquhoun has made commitment to eye care at the Zimba Eye Clinic ever since.
Recent mission projects have been sponsored by FOZ, First Wesleyan Church of Battle Creek, and International Vision Volunteers.
Zambia is a country about the size of Texas situated in south central Africa with a population of 12 million.

The country is challenged by poverty and disease, with an HIV/AIDS rate of 17%. The average life expectancy in Zambia is 38 years of age.  There are only about a dozen ophthalmologists in the country, with few performing surgery.  Cataracts, glaucoma, trachoma and injuries account for treatable blindness in many Zambians.

In a typical week at the Zimba Clinic, about 100 surgeries are performed, 500 patients are screened for eye problems, hundreds of medications are prescribed, and dozens of glasses are dispensed.

Please consider a donation by picking up a form at our office, download donation form by clicking here, or donating through Battle Creek Community Foundation.
