Oculoplastic
Surgery
What do
your eyes reveal about you? Do they appear sleepy or bored?
Do heavy brows make you look angry or worried? If puffy eyelids,
excessive wrinkles or eye abnormalities are robbing you of
vision or the look you want, then it may be time to consider
oculoplastic surgery.
Oculoplastics
is the correction of eye problems through the use of plastic
surgery. Modern surgical techniques can return a bright, healthy
appearance, repair damage caused by accident or disease, or
reconstruct birth defects.
Most oculoplastic
procedures can be safely performed in the doctor’s office,
or in an outpatient surgical center. Special attention is
given to making the surgical experience as comfortable and
enjoyable as possible.
Cosmetic
Surgery
Your
eyes are often the first things someone notices about you.
Because eyelid skin is the thinnest and most delicate of the
body, it often shows the earliest signs of aging. Many of
these changes can be lessened with oculoplastic surgery.
The normal
aging process often causes the loss of skin elasticity, bagging
of the lid skin and drooping of the brows and lids. Oculoplastic
surgery can lessen the aging changes by removing excess eyelid
skin and eliminating puffiness around the eyes. In certain
cases, these conditions can be corrected without making an
external skin incision.
Our goal
is to return normal, youthful appearance and function without
causing an unnatural or "plastic" look.
Plastic
Surgery
Whether
as the result of aging, disease or injury, many stand to benefit
from oculoplastic reconstructive surgery. Blind or dysfunctional
eyes can be replaced with prosthetic eyes (implants) that
look and move so close to normal that they are difficult for
people to detect.Facial Trauma which has damaged the eyelids,
cheeks, or orbital bones can also be reconstructed. The repair
may involve repositioning the bone, occasionally requiring
bone or skin grafts or the use of synthetic reconstructive
materials.
Oculoplastic
surgery can also correct functional problems that may arise
during the aging process.These
difficulties include obstruction of vision, eyelid malposition,
tumors, inadequate protection of the eyes, early fatigue and
blurring of vision.
The primary
goal of reconstructive surgery is to restore function while
improving the eye’s appearance.
Lacrimal
Surgery
In the healthy eye, tears are formed in the lacrimal gland.
Theses tears bathe, lubricate and protect the eye before being
drained away.
When tear
production is insufficient, serious and sight-threatening
conditions may result. If the tear drainage systems are blocked,
tears overflow onto the face and the tear sac becomes susceptible
to infection.
Fortunately,
much can be done to improve these conditions. Dry eye conditions
can be helped by altering the rate of tear drainage and blocked
tear drainage systems can be opened or reconstructed.
Fees
and Insurance
Many
surgical fees are at least partially covered by medical insurance.
Our office manager would be happy to discuss your insurance
coverage or payment arrangement with you at the time your
surgery is scheduled.
