CATARACT SURGERY

Cataracts

Cataracts are a leading cause of vision loss among adults 55 and older. In fact, more than half the people over age 65 have some degree of cataract development. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens.

Generally, a cataract is related to the aging of the eye, but there are other causes of cataracts as well. They include: family history, medical problems (i.e. diabetes), injury to the eye, medications such as steroids, and long-term unprotected exposure to sunlight.

Treatment Options

The best way to detect a cataract is by having a thorough eye examination.

Early on, changing glasses may help. Eventually most people will need cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is very successful, and a good choice when the cataract interferes with important activities such as driving and reading. An implant lens is needed to replace your own lens.

A new option for some people is the Acrysof ReSTOR® multifocal intraocular lens implant. With ReSTOR®, nearly 80% of patients see well without glasses at any distance. The Acrysof Toric lens conveniently corrects cataracts and treats preexisting astigmatism on one step.

SWMEC utilizes Brookside Surgery Center in the lower level of Brookside Medical Center for Cataract and other surgeries. The 11,000 square foot state of the art Ambulatory Surgery Center, contains three major operating suites and two minor procedure rooms.
