Intralase Method™ LASIK with Wavefront– The Procedure

LASIK is an acronym for Laser assisted In-situ Keratomileusis, which simply means to “shape the cornea within, using a laser.” It corrects vision by reshaping the cornea (outer clear tissue of the eye) so that light rays focus more precisely on the retina.

LASIK with Intralase Method™ or Wavefront could be right for you!

The Intralase Method™ is a LASIK procedure that's 100% blade-free, eliminating the metal cutting blade which helps achieve better vision. The computer-guided laser creates a precise corneal flap offering greater assurance of a safer procedure and an excellent result. More patients may now be candidates for laser vision correction due to the unique level of precision.

LASIK “Wavefront” offers customized treatment, which is tailored to very small visual irregularities that are specific to one's eyes. Wavefront treatment helps reduce night vision, glare and contrast sensitivity problems. “Wavefront” treatment offers the most technologically advanced way to restore your vision.

LASIK is a sophisticated procedure that previously used an instrument called a microkeratome, or steel blade, to create a thin corneal flap much like a contact lens. Dr. Colquhoun has been using the Intralase FS Laser since early 2004. This Intralase created flap is hinged on one side and is lifted back, exposing the inner surface of the cornea. At this point, the excimer laser is used to emit a cool beam to remove a microscopic layer of tissue.

Therefore, the shape of the cornea is corrected under the surface, and is made flatter to treat nearsightedness, steeper to treat farsightedness, and/or more spherical to correct astigmatism. During the procedure the patient is awake, but a topical eye drop is applied to numb the eye so that the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure. Because the treatment is performed beneath the flap, patients experience virtually no discomfort, and visual recovery is rapid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for LASIK?
Typically, the ideal LASIK candidate is over age 21 and has healthy corneas. Patients must not have had a significant increase in their prescription in the last year. People with certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, pregnancy and unstable diabetes may not be good LASIK candidates.

Does LASIK hurt?
The LASIK procedure is generally painless. Because the cornea is easily numbed with “eye drop” anesthesia, patients report little, if any, discomfort both during and after the procedure.

Will I have 20/20 vision after the procedure?
We hope so, but as with any surgical procedure, there is no guarantee that you will have perfect vision or that you will not need distance or reading glasses again. However, almost everyone experiences improved vision, and over 98% see well enough to pass a driver's test without corrective lenses.

What are the risks associated with LASIK?
As with any surgical procedure, LASIK has some risks, although they are rare. The risks and benefits will be thoroughly explained to you, and all of your questions will be answered by a professional staff member during your free consultation.
