Back to School Vision Screenings
Eye conditions, diseases, and injuries that can rob your family of their vision can strike at any time in life, from newborn to seniors. The eye care professionals at Southwest Michigan Eye Center urge you to protect your child’s eyes by having them screened for problems before the age of 5.
Before Age 3
Since it is possible for your child to have a serious vision problem without being aware of it, your child should have his or her eyes screened during regular pediatric appointments. Vision testing is recommended for all children starting around 3 years of age.
If there is a family history of vision problems or if your child appears to have any of the following conditions speak to your Eye M.D. promptly about when and how often your child's eyes should be examined:
Age 3 to 19
To ensure your child or teenager's eyes remain healthy, he or she should have his or her eyes screened every one to two years with an Optomtetrsist or Ophthamologist, or during regular pediatric or family physician check-up appointments.
Some warning signs that your child may have vision problems include wandering or crossed eyes, a family history of vision problems, a disinterest in reading, viewing distant objects and squinting, or turning the head in an unusual manner while watching TV.
About one quarter of school-aged children have vision problems. Of children ages 3 to 5, nearly one in 20 has a problem that could result in permanent vision loss if left untreated. And yet, nearly 80 percent of preschoolers don’t receive a vision screening.
